Tony is a high
school English teacher who has
been playing music in the Birmingham
area for
over fifteen years. Tony plays tenor
banjo,
five string banjo, guitar and eight
string lap steel
professionally. He enjoys a variety of
music including
Hawaiian, swing, bossa nova, klezmer and
of course
New Orleans Jazz. Tony credits
Birmingham Jazz
Legend Irvin Payne as his greatest
influence. Payne
exposed him to many of the musical styles
Tony currently
plays. He also taught Tony the
importance of having
a wide repertoire, as well as proficiency
on one's instrument.
Tony claims that studying vocalists all
his life has helped him
become a stronger player. Some of his
favorite singers
are Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Joni
James, Louis
Armstrong and Bing Crosby. |
